The level 1, local refereeing award is an online workshop completed within an hour, this course is targeted towards individuals beginning their refereeing journey or are seeking official accreditation of their current skills and knowledge. The course provides participants with the knowledge and qualifications to referee local school competitions.

The level 2, regional refereeing award is an award attained via completion of an in-person theory workshop, an online examination, as well as a practical component, including practical assessment. The award is targeted to individuals progressing their level of refereeing, with zone tournaments, national secondary school tournaments, and age group national representative tournaments being appropriate competition levels for this qualification.
The level 3, national refereeing award is attained by individuals who complete online and in-person workshop and exam components, the individual must be endorsed by their regional association and have previously completed and displayed high competency at the regional level. The award allows individuals to referee national senior events, zone events and NVL games/tournaments.
The level 4, federation award is the highest level of referee qualification, the qualification requires completion of previous awards, as well as in-person and online workshop and exam components. The award allows the individual to referee international level games and competitions both in New Zealand and around the globe.
